Seven-Day Kenya Family Safari

Short Overview

Often, safari itineraries do not take into account children coming along for the ride. While kids can certainly enjoy game drives, we at Shadows of Africa have designed this itinerary to ensure that adults and kids alike can leave Kenya with cherished memories.

We understand that parents need time and space to relax while children need time to enjoy themselves and burn off some energy outside of a safari vehicle, and have designed this itinerary accordingly.

We've hand-picked activities that will entertain both young and old, and designed an itinerary guaranteed to please the young, the young at heart, and those wanting to see Africa's iconic wildlife.

DAY 1 - NAIROBI CITY TOUR

You'll begin your safari adventure with a visit to Nairobi's popular Animal Orphanage. Housed within Nairobi National Park, the Animal Orphanage was established as a refuge and rehabilitation centre and is home to more than twenty animal and bird species. Adults and children alike will have the chance to bond with these animals in an up close and personal experience.

Later in the morning, at 11am, you'll head to the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage. You and your kids will get to watch as these adorable baby elephants work through their rehabilitation with exercises, feeding, and bathing.

Next stop is the Giraffe Centre - a breeding centre for the Rothschild Giraffe. The centre's elevated feeding platform lets visitors have a face to face view of the giraffes as they eat, and children are even afforded the opportunity to hand feed one of these beautiful creatures. You'll also have the chance to roam the Giraffe Centre's beautiful grounds, and might meet a few of the centre's taller residents as you walk.

After lunch, it's time to visit Mamba Village for a visit to their Crocodile Farm and meet their Masai Ostrich population. Other activities at Mamba Village include fishing, cycling, and swimming. It's up to you!

DAY 2 - NAIROBI - OL PEJETA CONSERVANCY

You'll depart from Nairobi after breakfast for the drive to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, sometimes known as Sweet Waters. Along the way you'll pass through colourful tea and coffee plantations as well as crossing the equator from the southern hemisphere into the northern hemisphere.

After lunch at Sweet Waters, you'll head out into the park for a game drive. While on your game drive, you'll stop at the park's famous Chimpanzee Sanctuary for a guided tour. You'll get to meet the sanctuary's highly-endangered and highly intelligent residents under the watchful eye of a specially trained ranger.

Your game drive will also include a visit to the Morani Centre to meet Baraka, the conservancy's famous tamed rhino. A blind rhino who was moved to the conservancy for his own safety, Baraka is a friendly sight and visitors can even participate in his feeding at various times during the day.

After these visits, you'll finish off your afternoon with a drive through the park in search of the Big 5 - leopards, lions, elephants, rhinos, and buffalo.
