We will guide you through the essentials to pack for your Serengeti safari, helping you navigate the challenges of a remote and diverse environment. From clothing suitable for various weather conditions to practical gear and essential items, we have you covered.
Additionally, we will explore the culinary delights that await you on your safari, from delicious picnic meals to refreshing beverages, with some tips on being prepared.
What to pack for the Serengeti
Make a list of what to pack and make sure you have all the important things before you go. You can start with what you normally take on holiday, but there are some things specific to safari that you’ll need to pack too.
Pack lightweight and loose-fitting clothes to keep you dry, in neutral colors like khaki and dark green to fit in with the wilderness, and make sure to pack something warm to wear in the cool early mornings when you set out on the road.
Take some shoes you can comfortably walk in for extended periods of time. The classic safari boots, or “chukkas”, are great all-rounders. If you are planning on doing some trekking in the bush, you’ll probably want to take some sturdy hiking boots too.
Take sun protection, like a broad-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and a high-SPF sunscreen, as well as insect repellent (consult your doctor or pharmacist to find the best one for you).
Make sure you consider your medication needs, too. Remember that some things may not be available everywhere, especially when you’re in the bush, far away from any town or city, and pack what you need. Consult your doctor for detailed advice before your departure.
Once you have the essentials covered, then start packing things to enhance your experience. A camera, a pair of binoculars, a laptop, and other personal equipment, can help you enjoy the experience as well as remember it later on.
Food on safari
You can absolutely expect to find familiar, globally-popular foods on your African safari. Safari lodges are used to catering to people from all over the world, and they know what people like to eat.
Breakfast typically includes omelets, cereals, toast, fruits, salads, or a continental breakfast.
You are most likely going to be enjoying your lunch in the middle of your game drive, and it will usually be served picnic-style. Shadows Of Africa takes these mid-safari meals very seriously! And, at dinnertime, you will typically be treated to a full three-course meal, taking advantage of local produce and the culinary talents of the lodge chefs.
If you have any dietary restrictions or special requests, it's important that you inform your tour operator or accommodation provider ahead of time, so they can make appropriate arrangements.
The perfect safari meal is a combination of a stunning location around you, and beautiful food in front of you.
