The towering mountains of the Drakensberg, the highest of which peaks at 3,475 metres, have attracted nature lovers for centuries now. Their jagged peaks offer a dramatic backdrop to the hiking trails, historic sites, and towns that dot the region.
Outdoor enthusiasts will find the region has plentiful opportunities for hiking, horse riding, offroading, and fishing - with more sedate activities like golf and lawn bowls also available.

One of South Africa’s most popular scenic attractions, the dramatic peaks of the Drakensberg Mountains were so named because they resemble the teeth of a dragon. Even the native Zulu saw something ominous in this craggy peaks, with the local name - uKhahlamba - translating as ‘barrier of up pointed spears’.
