Details van Side Striped Jackal (canis adustus)

Appears more or less uniform grey from a distance, but there are some regional differences with more brown evident. At close quarters a light coloured stripe, or band, liberally fringed with black, is seen along each flank hense its name.

Their mostly supported solitary and  territory is occupied by a mated pair.

Their call has been likened to an owl like hoot or a series of short yaps, quite unlike that of the black backed jackal.
