Ethiopië
Ethiopia, located in the famous Horn of Africa, is known as both as the Land of Origins and the Land of a Thousand Smiles.
Ethiopia is a nation filled with so much history and culture, all of it set amongst a vibrant tapestry of unique landscapes. Ethiopia can boast an impressive eight Cultural World Heritage Sites within its borders: Aksum, Gondar, Harar, Konso, Awash Valley, the Omo Valley, Lalibela and Tiya.
Perhaps Ethiopia’s greatest claim to fame is that it was the only African nation to successfully fight against the infamous “Scramble for Africa” that saw European nations colonising the continent. Formerly known as Abyssinia, Ethiopia twice resisted Italian occupation and has been able to preserve much of its culture and history as a result.
With its own alphabet and a thirteen month calendar, Ethiopia presents one of Africa’s most unique and best preserved cultures against one of the continent’s most startlingly beautiful backdrops.
