The original Arabic name is manbasa, in Swahili it is called Kisiwa cha mvita meaning Island of War. The city has a rich history because of the many immigrants and traders who came to conquer and settle in Mombasa particularly from Iran, Middle East and Indian Subcontinent and then intermarried. The town is occupied by Muslim Mijikenda / Swahili people.

Kenya Railways runs a passenger train from Nairobi to Mombasa. In Mombasa, you can move around by the matatus, buses, tuk-tuk and boda-bodas.
