Details van Aksum

The Kingdom of Aksum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located within the northern region of Tigray. Here you can walk in the footsteps of the Queen of Sheba and experience the giant obelisks, royal tombs, and even the rumoured resting place of the fabled Ark of the Covenant.

Steeped in legend and mystery, Aksum was founded more than 3,000 years ago and it is from here that the Queen of Sheba is said to have ruled over a vast trade empire. It later served as capital of the Aksumite Kingdom, the only sub-Saharan African empire that co-existed with Greece and Rome.

Notable sites within the Ancient City of Aksum include the Church of St. Mary of Zion, the Northern Stelae Fields, the Abba Pentalewon Monastery, and the tombs of King Kaleb and Gebre Meskel.
