One of Africa's oldest and largest protected areas, the Namib-Naukluft National Park marked its centenary in 2007 by reintroducing the black rhinoceros into its former territory. Other mammals that call the park home include cheetahs, leopards, and the Hartmann's zebra.
Not just a park for game drives, the Namib-Naukluft National Park is an adventurer's dream. From the opportunity to hike its desert gorges to going sandboarding on its towering dunes, the park's dry and barren interior is just begging to be explored.
Closer to civilisation, the wetlands of Sandwich Harbour and the mist-shrouded dunes outside of Swakopmund offer a chance to see smaller but no less fascinating game such as scorpions, sidewinders, flamingos, the intriguingly named dancing white lady spider, and the occasional opportunistic jackal.
Last, but certainly not least, the gravel strewn plains at the heart of the park transport visitors to another world. Aptly named as 'Moonscape', this alien landscape is at once fascinating and slightly terrifying. Something to tell the grand kids about, for sure!
