Prison Island Visit

One of Zanzibar’s most interesting islands, Prison
Island combines the former nation’s fascinatingly
dark history with its present day natural beauty.
Once a prison for unruly slaves, Prison Island
would later be a prison of the more generic vari-
ety. Many of the old prison buildings still exist on
the island, which has since become a sanctuary for
giant tortoises.
You can guide yourself to wander the ruins, take a
guided tour to learn more about the island’s histo-
ry, or take to the water for snorkeling – all within
eyeshot of Stone Town!
