Cultural Activities
Zanzibar’s days as a slave port are behind it, but the lucrative spice trade is
still very much a part of the Zanzibar economy. A visit to one of the island’s
spice plantations is not only a step back in time, but also an enlightening win-
dow into how spices get from the island to our tables. You’ll not only see how
the spices are grown, but also get to sample them and learn about their pur-
ported medicinal applications.
Want a glimpse into life for an everyday Zanzibar resident? Shadows of Africa
can arrange tours to local fishing communities to sample local food, see how
the iconic dhow boats are made, and engage with people whose lives exist
separately from Zanzibar’s thriving tourism economy.
