Tours and Activities
While it is certainly possible to spend weeks on Zanzibar and never need
to leave the idyllic beaches, there’s a wealth of things to see and do out-
side of the resort scene. Unguja’s interior is alive with possibilities rang-
ing from historic sites to cultural tours to exploring the island’s natural beauty.
Historic Sites
Stone Town has become synonymous with history, and the UNESCO World Her-
itage Listed site is a living museum. The Palace of Wonders, the Old Fort, the
former slave markets, a number of beautiful churches, and other historic sites
make a visit to Stone Town a must for anybody who appreciates history or archi-
tecture.
Nearby Prison Island, a prison that never saw prisoners, is also a window into
the region’s past. These days the intimidating prison is home to a population of
giant turtles, making it both a historic and natural landmark.
The island of Pemba is like something out of myth and legend too, with crum-
bling ruins hidden among its overgrown forests standing as testament to the
failed Arabic settlements that date back as far as the 1300s.
