The Danakil Depression
Подробнее о The Danakil Depression
No longer open to private travel, groups who visit the Danakil Depression can sleep out under the stars by night and explore the region’s distinctive volcanic landscape by day.
Erta Ale (Smoking Mountain), is the most iconic volcano in the area as it has had a permanent lava flow since the 19th century. It’s possible to climb the volcano during the late afternoon, sleep at the top, and then descend early in the morning.
Lying 120 metres below sea level, the Danakil Depression is the hottest and most inhospitable place on earth, as well as the most geologically active. The point at which three tectonic plates meet, Danakil is a region of salt flats, more than thirty active volcanoes, crystalline formations, and sulphurous pools.
