Wild Tanzania - 11 Day Southern Tanzania Adventure

Short Overview

Visit three of southern Tanzania’s most famous parks in this eleven day flying safari.

You’ll explore two of Africa’s largest game parks in the form of Selous Reserve and the famous Ruaha National Park. Providing a far more rugged and wild experience than you’ll find in the country’s north, these two parks combine well with Mahale – home of Tanzania’s little-known chimpanzee population.

Details of Wild Tanzania - 11 Day Southern Tanzania Adventure

DAY 1: DAR ES SALAAM – SELOUS

You’ll begin your safari adventure with a flight from Dar Es Salaam to the Selous Game Reserve, one of Africa’s largest reserves. At twice the size of the Serengeti and three times the size of Kruger, Selous is a rambling wilderness the likes of which you’ve never seen.

You’ll arrive at your lodge in time for lunch before heading out into the park for an afternoon game drive. Sometimes called Africa’s greatest surviving wilderness, Selous is home to more than 120,000 buffalo, 40,000 hippos, 35,000 zebras, and 4,000 lions.

DAYS 2 – 3: SELOUS

You’ll have two full days to explore the wilderness of Selous. Not only can you experience a wide variety of wildlife encounters with animals such as crocodiles, leopards, hyenas, African wild dogs, kudu, and elephants doing a game drive, but you also have the option to take activities such as guided game walks and boat safaris through the park.

DAY 4: SELOUS – RUAHA

You’ll have the opportunity to take one last game drive through the rambling wilderness before making the trip to Ruaha.

A forested park with rolling hills and a hot, dry climate that means animals tend to stick close to the water sources. This makes for fantastic game viewing opportunities, and the park’s isolation means it is considerably less crowded.

DAYS 5-7: RUAHA

Ruaha’s position as a middle ground between traditional savannah and woodlands means that it provides unique game-viewing conditions.

During your two day-long explorations of the park, you’ll see everything from traditional game such as buffalo, zebra, lions, and elephants to less common sights such as the Kudu, African Wild Dog, and sable antelope.

DAY 8 – RUAHA – MAHALE

After an early breakfast, you’ll board your flight for the Mahale National Park. Much larger than the more famous Gombe National Park, Mahale is famous for both its chimpanzee population and its dynamic terrain.

You’ll take a boat transfer out to the park in time for lunch and an afternoon activity such as kayaking, hiking, or bird-watching.

DAYS 9 – 10: MAHALE NATIONAL PARK

You’ll have two days to experience this beautiful park on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, with one of them best spent heading out to see its most famous inhabitants – the chimpanzees. Our closest living relatives are a source of endless fascination for travelers from all over the world, and you’ll have the chance to take a guided trek out to meet them face to face.

On your second day, you might wish to take a guided nature walk, a serene boat safari, or simply enjoy the natural beauty of this well-kept secret.

DAY 11: MAHALE – DAR ES SALAAM

You’ll board your flight back to civilization today, returning to Dar Es Salaam for your onward travel.
