Shadows of Africa were the perfect company to book our honeymoon safari with and we couldn’t have been happier with it! We did 6 nights starting with pick up in Arusha, heading to Lake Manyara, out to the Serengeti, back through Ngorongoro ...
We just returned from our Tanzania / Zanzibar honeymoon today and feel eager to leave this glowing review for Shadows of Africa as we cannot more highly recommend them ! We had the most perfect experience and are so grateful to Shadows of Africa every step of the way.

- The safari itself exceeded our wildest dreams. We saw The Big 5, the Great Migration wildebeest river crossing, and much more. Our guide Dickson was an absolute super star. He is exceptionally skilled, full of knowledge, and contagiously passionate about the wildlife with many years of experience on the job. We witnessed many cars/guides succumb to the difficult road conditions, but not Dickson! He was dedicated to getting us the best views; he knew the animals better than they knew themselves - he knew the cheetah would eventually cross this direction, or that the lion would pounce for her kill at this particular moment … and this knowledge and patience granted us the BEST safari imaginable. On top of this all, Dickson is a truly wonderful person. We loved spending time with him, and it was obvious how deeply loved and highly revered he is among the other guides. He is the guide who others turn to in times of need; we got to see his selflessness first hand in helping guides from other companies who were lost in the park or who had car troubles. Dickson knew how to fix everything for everyone and make everyone feel good in the process. We cannot believe how lucky we were to be paired with Dickson. We will always remember him and plan to keep in touch.

- Booking everything with our agent Karen was easy. She was very responsive to any questions / edits of the itinerary we proposed. We added a snorkel trip in Zanzibar relatively last minute and she was able to work this out for us no problem. Communication was very clear and the personalized "website" that they provide with the details of your individual trip was excellent.

- All of the accommodations were lovely and unique with delicious meals. Every one of them was clean, comfortable, and a fun experience. Additionally, the staff at all of the accommodations were incredibly kind and dedicated to making our stay wonderful. (Olerai Lodge, Simba Lodge, Angata Serengeti Camp, Acacia Camp, Marera Mountain View Lodge, Tumbili Lodge, and Zanzibar Queen)

- Everybody that we encountered from Shadows of Africa was great: our incredible guide Dickson as mentioned above, Esther who picked us up from the airport and taught us some background on the Masai people and go-to Swahili phrases, David who drove us to the airport, and Mohamed in Zanzibar who guided us through Stone Tone and taught us Zanzibar's history

We had the BEST experience with Shadows of Africa and highly recommend working with them !! Our trip just ended and we are already talking about doing another trip with them in the future :)
When planning our trip to Tanzania, we ran across Shadows of Africa. We read other client reviews on TripAdvisor and you guys did not disappoint!

The mastermind behind our tailor-made expedition was Marion, a true maestro of travel planning. We visited Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, and the Serengeti by canoe, horseback, hot air balloon, and jeep.

The lodgings ranged from rustic chic to slightly posh and each had a story to tell. The food was on point, the beers were remarkably cheap, and the staff were very attentive. Nothing unites travelers like good food and a cold one. We were fascinated by the “talking” showers where a guy on the other side of the tent flap hoisted fire-heated water from outside so you can feel clean after a long day on dusty roads.
Thank you Lies, Loma and Assad. You all rock!!
What REALLY made the trip, though, was our safari guide, Bryson. I don’t know of many who could handle four middle-aged ladies on an 8-day trek through Tanzanian wilderness armed with only binoculars, cameras, a desire for adventure, and small bladders. Between animal sightings we struggled between staying hydrated and a constant reliance on bush toilets.
Bryson was our encyclopedia of all things Tanzania. He had a knack for spotting wildlife from far away and position his vehicle for excellent game viewing. We saw the migration four times! He joined us every night for dinner and even some breakfasts. Our chats ranged from Tanzanian culture to swapping embarrassing family stories. Bryson also has a grandma-loving side hustle. My mom, aka BiBi, became his honorary grandmother. Seriously, I wouldn't be surprised if he had secret lessons in "grandma pampering" before becoming a guide. She recently lost her husband of 60 years, my father, so I can’t even begin to tell you how much it meant to me that he was always looking out for her. In another TripAdvisor post, my travel buddy posted the story of the missing purse. After the hot air balloon company searched the transport vehicle and couldn’t find it, Bryson drove to the airport, searched the vehicle himself, and found it wedged between seats – he truly went above and beyond!
Bryson’s sense of humor was the cherry on top. We laughed so hard, even the animals gave us curious looks.
Lessons for aspiring explorers? Book with Shadows of Africa, make Bryson your spirit guide, go airborne in a hot air balloon (who knew wildebeests looked cute from above?), schedule some nap time between all that wildlife excitement, and for the sake of your derrière, consider those oh-so-smooth flights between parks. Asante sana for creating an experience that left us roaring for more! And yes, Bryson, your wildebeest impressions will forever echo in our hearts.
Had a fantastic honeymoon safari & Gorilla Trek with Shadows of Africa.

We knew we wanted to go on a safari but was unsure how to go about booking/places to visit. We contacted shadows of Africa due to recommendations online. Within 24 hours Alona contacted us and helped us to book our trip. Due to flight availability and covid restrictions we had to re-plan the holiday a couple of times, this was no trouble Alona was fantastic at getting this sorted for us.

We decided on a multi centre trip to Rwanda first to see the Gorillas and then onto Tanzania for a safari. Our trip was in February this year, everything ran seamlessly, and we encountered no issues, from the planning to the actual trip itself.

Onto our trips. We were greeted in Rwanda by our tour guide Paul. His passion for his country and knowledge on the area was fantastic, any question we had, he had the answer to. He also recommended us activities to do on our first day in Rwanda (Kigali Genocide Memorial & Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund ) we would recommend doing these. The Gorilla trekking was a fantastic experience and would highly recommend. Paul couldn’t have done more, from his recommendations to making sure we were settled into our hotels.

After our trip in Rwanda we flew to Tanzania to start our safari. Here we met our guide, Edwin. Edwin again has such passion and knowledge on Tanzania that anything we was asked was answered. His knowledge on the animals was flawless, from Lions & leopards all the way down to dung beetles & local birds! He made sure that if we wanted to see something, we saw it. He also took into account the fact that we wanted to take photos, so was constantly making sure I was OK with the angles of animals. A fantastic driver and guide, you can just feel the passion and excitement he has for the wildlife and his job. Our last day on safari we had a breakdown but Edwin did everything in his power to make sure this did not affect our day – his friendliness with other drivers & guides really helped with this and we still managed a full day safari even with the breakdown.

Our experience with Shadows was fantastic, seamless and easy. From Alona’s booking and help before our holiday to Paul & Edwin on the ground. I would 100% recommended booking through them. The accommodation recommend to us was fantastic and honestly some of the best food we’ve ever eaten! 100% book with Shadows!!!
