Lamu

A window into Kenya's past, sleepy Lamu is one of the last true vestiges of traditional Swahili life. With cars not allowed on the island, visitors are whisked away into a land of donkey drawn carts, colourful dhow skimming the water, and locals who go about their lives at a pace far removed from the frantic rat race that is fast taking over the world. This 14th century Swahili settlement still bears the marks of its past as a Portuguese, Turkish, and Omani centre, but very much remains at peace with its native roots. Mango plantations, towering dunes, isolated beaches, and tiny villages dominate the landscape on this beautiful, relaxed tropical paradise.
