How Can I Pay for my Safari?

You've done it!

With the help of your Shadows of Africa safari expert, you've managed to find the perfect fit for you.

You've picked out your favorite hotels, locked in those all-important gorilla-trekking permits, and have found the perfect safari itinerary for you.

Your flights are booked and you're ready to go! All that remains is to make that daunting first payment.

The Shadows of Africa team understands that safaris aren't cheap and that you're sending a lot of money, so we have done our best to make it as easy as possible.

Below, you'll find a quick summary of the payment options we offer.

What Currency?

We are often asked if it is possible to pay in a currency other than US dollars.

Due to the fact East Africa's tourism industry runs on the US dollar, we cannot accept payments in pounds, Euros, Australian dollars, rubles, or pesos.

Your local office may have systems in place to allow payments in other currencies (see below), but our head office can only accept payments in US dollars.

Bank Transfer

By far the easiest option for both Shadows of Africa and you, a bank transfer payment can be made directly to one of our offices in Tanzania, Kenya, or Rwanda.

As we mentioned above, all payments to Tanzania, Kenya, or Rwanda will need to be made in USD. We cannot accept payment in other currencies.

Alternatively, if you would rather pay to the agent you have been dealing with, we also have accounts in the US, Australia, and more.

All payments should be made in USD, but your local agent may have options in place for paying in local currency.

Chris in our Australian office accepts payments in AUD, for example, but requires clients to use the ANZ currency exchange rather than that shown on Google.

What About TransferWise?

TransferWise is a fantastic tool, offering favorable exchange rates and cheaper transfer fees than most banks.

However, due to TransferWise's use of the SWIFT system, intermediary banks between TransferWise and Shadows of Africa take a $50 USD bite out of every transaction.

If you're looking to pay via TransferWise, you'll either need to cover this $50 USD discrepancy or look into transferring to one of our regional offices.

Credit Card

Shadows of Africa is also set up to accept payments via credit card, although our payment processor does add a 5% surcharge on top of all payments.

Clients booking through our US office are in luck, as Jake and the team have negotiated a 4% surcharge for their clients.

It is not possible for non-US booked clients to pay via our US office, unfortunately.

Balance Payments on Credit Card

When making your final balance payment via credit card, it is important that this is done no later than 30 days from your arrival. Credit card payments can take up to 30-days to clear into our account so we cannot accept last minute payments via credit card.

Paying by credit card on arrival is not possible.


PayPal is not legal in Tanzania, but several of our local offices are able to accept payment via PayPal.

Both our US office and our Asia-Pacific office are set up to receive payments via PayPal, but you'll be liable for the 4% surcharge that PayPal applies to all business payments.

Payments via PayPal must be paid in USD.

Cash on Arrival

We understand that it can be daunting to wire thousands of dollars to a foreign country on good faith, so we are prepared to negotiate cash on arrival in certain circumstances.

While deposits will still be made via bank transfer or credit card at the time of booking, you may be able to bring along US dollars and pay these at our office at the beginning of your safari. You won't be able to set off on safari until this is done!

Personal Cheque

For customers in the United States and dealing with our US office, it is also possible to pay via personal cheque.

What About Refunds?

We understand that sometimes 'life happens'.

Deaths in the family, sudden illness, changes in financial circumstances, pregnancies, and the like are all valid reasons to want to cancel or reschedule your safari with Shadows of Africa.

Whenever possible, we will always recommend rescheduling your safari rather than canceling it. Why? While hotels may refuse to refund deposits for a canceled safari, many will be flexible about simply changing the dates.

Travel Insurance

We always recommend that our clients take out a comprehensive travel insurance policy as part of booking with us. Any good travel insurance plan will cover you in the unfortunate event that you need to cancel or reschedule your trip due to unforeseen circumstances.
