Details of Zanzibar Chumbe Island trip

Chumbe Island Coral Park, CHICOP, is an award-winning private nature park just off the coast of Zanzibar. It was developed in 1991 when the formerly uninhabited Chumbe Island was recognized to be one of the last pristine coral islands in the region.

After a short boat drive on a traditional boat, check-in to one of the fabulous zero-impact bungalows, specially designed to honor African building traditions and local materials. Each bungalow functions as a self-sufficient unit.

After all the awing and sighing, choose to walk the hour-long forest trail and encounter more than 80 bird species, many reptiles and insects, and the endangered cutie - the Ader's antelope.

Another jewel is the breathtaking view from the lighthouse - something well worth the 132 steps. The lighthouse, constructed in 1904, is remaining important navigational aid in the region.

Make something special of your evening and join the rangers in a night walk to the forest's edge to spot the giant, but elusive coconut crabs. These largest living land crabs can grow to one meter from leg to leg and weigh up to 4 kilograms. They're able to climb coconut trees and crack the nuts open.

But the most mesmerizing experience is snorkeling in the coral reefs waters, admiring all the beautiful life bursting there. More than 500 fish species, countless diverse corals, starfish, and much more of the sea-life of exceptional beauty.

If the tide is right, you may even go for a guided intertidal walk. Explore the rock pools, impressive overhangs, and inter-tidal marine environment.

If the sea is right, enjoy a sunset in the Chumbe ngalawa, a traditional wooden dugout outrigger fishing boat, commonly used by local fishermen in Zanzibar waters.

This offer includes:

· Transportation: from any hotel in Zanzibar

· All boat transfers, including the sunset sail

· Accommodation in unique eco-bungalows, full-board (excl. alcoholic beverages),

· All activities on the island accompanied by our trained rangers

Our advice:

· Suitable for all ages and fitness level, also very romantic

· Chumbe Island bungalows' capacity is limited to 18 guests, so great privacy is assured.

Short Overview

Chumbe Island is an internationally acclaimed conservation area and it presents ecotourism at its finest. Chumbe is operating as a non-profit enterprise and with the revenue generated by eco-tourism on the island, it became the world’s first financially self-sustaining marine protected area.

Half a square kilometer coral reef sanctuary and forest reserve are home to diverse corals, over 500 reef fish species, many crustaceans, among them the giant coconut crab, tortoises, and critically endangered Ader's antelopes.

A very romantic and still very active retreat from the real world, almost a must for the environmentally conscious one.
